Update: Spartan Races + Injury

I've been MIA again for a little over a week.  This was not my intention at all.  I planned on getting back from the Spartan Beast & Sprint giddy with excitement and ready to share the experience here on the blog.  But, sometimes life doesn't go as planned.

First, the good news:

1.  The SoCal Spartan Beast was an amazing experience again.  I'm glad Jason and I finished strong, albeit exhausted!

2.  We both finished the Spartan Sprint and because the event had been rescheduled from September, we got both the 2014  and the 2015 medals.  Woohoo, I finally got my Spartan Trifecta for 2014!

And now, the bad news:

Jason hurt himself on the last obstacle.  It was a Tarzan swing type thing, where you had to swing from one end to the other without touching the water trench that was in the middle.  Sadly, Jason's foot hit the edge of the trench and fell into the water.  He knew he was hurt pretty badly and got help getting out of the water.  Meanwhile, I was on the side doing my burpee penalty.  I didn't even attempt that obstacle!  I saw him limping towards the finish line, but assumed it was a leg cramp.  Once I crossed the finish line, I saw that he was hurt and he immediately called for medic.  That is of course, once that finisher medal was around his neck!  True Spartan.  At the medic tent I could see his ankle was super swollen and after they bandaged his ankle and put ice on it, we got a ride to our car and were told to go to the hospital.  I had about 5 minutes to run to bag check for our stuff, grab our finisher tshirts, and on Jason's insistence, I purchased the Trifecta  holder I was waiting to buy after the race.  Once I got back to the medic tent, Jason was already in the van that was taking us and a few other injured Spartans back to our cars.

We knew getting him to the hotel room would be difficult, so we stopped at Wal-Mart and I bought him some crutches.  Thank goodness for elevators!  We made it to our room and decided to not rush home, but rather keep the foot iced, elevated, and give him ibuprofen.  Throughout the entire ordeal Jason remained calm and said he wasn't in  much pain.  The next morning, we checked out and arrived to Vegas a little before noon.  We went straight to the urgent care and after getting his xray, it was confirmed his ankle was fractured and we got a referral to see a podiatrist the next morning.  At the appointment, we learned his injury and fracture was pretty bad and had to have surgery.  Surgery was scheduled for Thursday morning.  I'm relieved to say that surgery went well and he's healing now.  We're doing everything we can to keep him comfortable, but of course he isn't able to move much and he needs to keep his leg elevated, so he isn't always feeling great.   But, the doctor is sure he'll make a speedy recovery!  Not sure he'll be doing another Spartan race anytime soon, but we'll see ;)

Big thanks to all our family and friends for the visits, phone calls, texts, and messages on facebook and instagram!  We appreciate it so much.

So, that's where I've been since Sunday, playing nurse and taking care of the Mr.  I'll be blogging the race recaps later this week, though.  Hoping to be getting back to some sort of routine here soon.  Not just with blogging, but with work, home life, and nutrition and workouts!

January Health & Fitness Goals

Here we go with another post on goals!  It's January, what can I say?  I really do like to give myself these monthly goals, though.  They really help me to stay focused and/or re-focus on what I need to be doing one month at a time.  It keeps things from getting too overwhelming.  Some months I kill it, I hit each goal and other months I struggle and miss the mark.  But, I don't let it stop me.  I just try to look at the big picture and be honest with myself as to why I didn't meet my goals.  Was I lazy? Busy? Did I set unrealistic goals? Etc...This helps me so I can set more attainable goals.  So, for December, sadly, the goals were not met 100%.

I kept training for Spartan.  I didn't run a 5K with my family, I did sign up for an actual 5K Race on Dec. 31st and completed my 14 in 2014 challenge.  And although my family didn't run with me, they were there cheering me on!  I gained some weight, I lost some too, so pretty much stayed even : / I managed to run 43 miles in December, not quite the 50 I wanted but close...I did 321 burpees in December, though! It wasn't a total flop of a month, but wish I would have reached my mileage and of course, losing the weight would have been awesome, but hey there's always next month...

I kept January pretty vague.  So far 13 days into January and I gotta say, I'm doing okay!  Ready to take on the Spartan Beast & Sprint races this weekend and finally get my trifecta! Woohoo

What are your goals for January?  We're aalmost half way through the month already, how are you doing with reaching your goals?

December Health & Fitness Goals

This is the last month of the year and I plan on making it a good one.  December is always a time for me to reflect on the year past and work on making improvements for the next year.  I usually do this in a very informal way.  Maybe I'll grab a notebook and write a few things down or I'll put it in my notes app on my phone while waiting in line or something.  But this year it will be different. This year it will be intentional.  I've already scheduled a day for the hubs and I to sit down and talk about 2015 goals.  Everything from finances, vacations, business, and health is on the agenda.  2015 will be my year to organize and make things happen!  Who's with me?!?!

On to my recap....October was such a good month for me reaching my goals, I really set the bar high for November thinking I could keep it going and really I should have.  But, life happens and I still have a hard time staying focused and disciplined on vacation.  I only ran 3.5 miles that week and that really put me behind on my goal for 60 miles.  I tried hard to make it up that last week in Nov, but I came short 7 miles.  53 miles isn't so bad, right?  Again, that trip to Texas got in the way and I ended up gaining 3 of the 4 pounds I lost in Oct.  Boo...but, I worked hard and lost them when I got back so, I'm back where I was in October, but not where I want to be yet!  The 12K trail race went great and I was really happy with my time.  You can read the full recap HERE ;) And extra core work, well, yea, that didn't happen.

For December I really, really, want to lose those elusive 3 lbs.  Like for real, I have to!! No excuses.  I'll be training hard for the Spartan Beast & Sprint coming up in January and running will help me a ton. I did lower the milage, though, because I know it's going to be a busy month and we'll be going away for a weekend too.  300 burpess? Why not, bring it on!

What are some of your goals for December?  Are you taking it easy this last month of the year or are you gonna end 2014 with a bang?
