Las Vegas Spartan Super | Race Recap

Spartan Races are some of my favorite races ever! I've done more Spartan Races than any other race, with a total of 9 races - 2 Beasts, 4 Supers, and 3 Sprints! I love the Spartan Races because although they are challenging and tough, there is a great spirit of camaraderie and fun too! And you can't beat that feeling of accomplishment when you conquer obstacles you trained so hard for. Plus: free beer at the finish!

I hadn't planned on running the Las Vegas Spartan Super this year because I'm a wimp.  The race was scheduled to be at the same location as last year and the course was super sandy and I remember how much I did not enjoy trying to run 4 miles or so in sand. But, when a friend of a friend found out she couldn't run it just 2 weeks before race day, I jumped on the opportunity to have her race deferred to me! I couldn't resist.  The 8 + miles wouldn't be a problem because I've been training for the Zion Half Marathon coming up April 1st.  The obstacles and sand however, were a whole other story! Although I knew I couldn't get myself in top shape in just 2 weeks and I knew my upper body strength was nowhere it had been, I didn't think it would be so hard.  But, yikes did I struggle!  It was especially sad to struggle on obstacles that I don't normally struggle with. I had a lot of help from my teammates and fellow racer on course.  Like I said, all that help and support from fellow Spartans is what makes me love this race series!  My teammates and I finished strong and for 3 of the 5 of us, it was their first Spartan Race ever.  Seeing my friend conquer obstacles she didn't think she could was so awesome and really made that race special for me! 

This race was such a wake up call for me.  Like I said, I finished the race and I had a ton of fun running it but deep down I know I can perform better.  So, what do you do when you don't run your best race? You literally wash off the mud and sign up for another one! In my case, you sign up for the Spartan Beast + Sprint coming up in October in Big Bear Lake, CA and aim to get that Trifecta one more time.  Let the training begin! AROO!

April Goals & March Goals Met

March was a busy month for us, but all in all, I think I stayed on track with my goals as best I could.  I don't expect perfection from myself every month and you shouldn't either.  We shouldn't feel guilty for not reaching every single goal 100%.   Monthly goals are a good way to keep track of our patterns and behaviors, as well as keeping us motivated.  Yes, it feels amazing when we work really hard and we meet every goal for the month despite the obstacles that life throws our way, but we should be proud of our hard work regardless.  Life is unpredictable and we gotta go with the flow sometimes.  That being said, here's my goals met for March:

I honestly have no idea if I lost any fat or not.  My guess is that I didn't, as my weight has pretty much stayed the same and I didn't measure at the beginning of the month.  Oopsy! I worked hard running and training for Spartan Super.  Although lunges didn't happen daily, I definitely got them in most of my workouts.  

I've kept my April goals pretty simple and straight forward.  I didn't give myself anything too specific, as I tend to stress about numbers and I don't want that right now.  I just want to focus on training, having fun, and getting healthy and strong.

Half Marathon + Spartan Training Update

So, I registered for the Wild Land Fire Awareness Half Marathon 2 weeks ago and in that time, I've been getting my running groove back and I've noticed a few differences already in my training.  Since it's a trail race, I'm hoping to get more trail running into my schedule.  So far, I've ran trails once each week and I'm hoping to stick to  1 or 2 trail runs a week.  I'm so grateful to the awesome running groups I'm a part of.  Some of these ladies are avid trail runners, so it's not hard finding group trail runs to join, since I'm still nervous of running on trails alone.  I am usually in the back of the group, but I'm ok with that ;) 

Another difference this time around, is that I am way more relaxed when it comes to my training schedule than I was my other 2 half marathons.   In the past, I have been very consistent with my Hal Higdon training schedule, but these few weeks my trail runs have been longer than what the training plan called for and I was totally ok with it.  I've also skipped some shorter runs and either called it a rest day or added strength training instead.  For you more experienced half marathon runners, is this normal?  Does this happen to you too or do you still stick to your training plan? 

Having the Las Vegas Spartan Super coming up April 18th also makes this half marathon training a bit challenging.  I want to keep up with my running schedule, but I also know I need to work on my endurance and strength training if I want to complete the Spartan Super without too many penalty burpees!  Spartan races are so much about upper body strength and  Body Pump and Kettle Bell classes at LVAC are big parts of my training.  I also meet with my personal trainer once a week and we do full body workouts with an emphasis on upper body strengthening and core work.  And of course, no Spartan training would be complete without a few visits to Camp Rhino!  Ya'll know how much I love this place.  Every Saturday they offer practice obstacle course races in their facility, where you get to try out the cargo nets, tire flips, getting over walls, and tons more!  They are now also offering Spartan Trail Practice races up until the Vegas Super.  This allows you to check out the obstacles in a more realistic outdoor setting.  I personally think this is a MUST DO if you want to get a feel for what the race is going to be like.  Vegas peeps, check it out!  Thank me later ;) I'll be out there soon getting my butt kicked for sure!  

So, there you have it.  Lots of training planned for the upcoming months!  I'm feeling confident about completing my first trail half marathon distance, just really going to work on getting stronger for those inclines and hoping to get faster.  Now, what are you training for right now?  I'd love to hear how your training is coming along too :)
